BREATHWORK / DANCE & NEUROSCIENCE
The Q-Motion Dance Technique© – TRAINING PROTOCOL

The BDN‑Lab masterclass is designed to provide breathwork protocols and tools to support the daily practice of dancers and athletes, with two objectives:

  1. To support Autonomic Nervous System regulation during both activation and recovery, through evidence-based techniques of vagal modulation and respiratory control.

  2. To enhance performance, psychophysical wellbeing and daily practice: focus, endurance, centring, awareness of one's internal state, recovery capacity, and self-regulation.

MASTERCLASS

The masterclass can be tailored to different formats, audiences and needs. The following is an example.

General Structure

  • Three days:

    • 1. Foundations

    • 2. Integration

    • 3. Consolidation

  • Each session lasts 45-60 minutes and it is scheduled at the beginning of each day. Alternatively, it may be delivered at the end of the day, with the cool-down component incorporated into the session itself.

  • Composed of three distinct blocks (A, B, C)

A – Basic Regulation

Breathwork techniques
(15–20')

B – Breathing Module

Related movement task / The Q-Motion Dance Technique©
(15-20')

C – Visualisation / Grounding

Micro‑cognitive routine / EIMS protocol
(15–20')

GOALS

  • Breathing Pattern: To establish a safe, repeatable evidence-based breathing routine, as a practical tool to support performance, recovery, self-regulation and overall psychophysiological wellbeing in dancers and athletes.

  • Pre- and Post- Performance Micro-Routines: To establish brief evidence-informed pre- and post- routines that optimise readiness, facilitate recovery and enhance consistency in training and performance.

  • Cognitive Tasks + Breathwork: To introduce brief cognitive tasks, based on the EIMS protocol – European Institute of Movement Science / The Q-Motion Dance Technique© (with age-appropriate variations) and breathwork, to support: attentional control, flow state, cognitive flexibility and performance under physical and psychological demands.

Please note: all participants undergo a brief pre-participation health screening questionnaire, to identify any respiratory conditions (e.g. asthma) or other relevant contraindications, allowing the protocol to be individually adapted.
